Panel discussion and workshop “EU – Umbrella of Different Nationalities” in Skopje, 4 December 2009.Skopje: 4 December 2009

The Leadership Development Programme - Group 4 “National Identities, Minority Rights and EU Integration” organized a panel discussion and workshop “EU – Umbrella of Different Nationalities” in Skopje, 4 December 2009. This panel discussion and workshop were held at the EU Info Centre – Delegation of the European Commission in Skopje and the main aim was raising the awareness about different national identities and minority rights in the participating countries.

The first part of the event was a panel discussion, in which the issue of different ethnic minorities in the SEE countries was discussed by two speakers, H.E Erwan FouereSpecial Representative of the European Union and Head of the Delegation of the European Union in the Republic of Macedonia and Ms. Marija RisteskaPublic Policy Analyst, Center for Research and Policy Making. The panel was opened by Ms. Ahu Yigit, LDP 2009/10 participant from Turkey and moderated by Ms. Mirjana Gjorgjevska, PR Consultant - Center for Non-formal Education TRIAGOLNIK.

H.E Erwan Fouere gave short evaluation of the Progress Reports and talked about the criteria that are asked from the candidate and potential candidate countries. He stressed the importance of the national identities and minority rights by saying that the heart of the EU integration is issue of ethnic minorities. Ms. Marija Risteska talked about national identities and minority rights in the SEE and about the importance of treating all national and ethnic minorities equally.

The second part of the event included interactive workshop – simulation game “I (am) like you” with 20 young participants from the region. Moderator of the simulation was Ms. Mirjana Gjorgjevska, PR Consultant - Center for Non-formal Education TRIAGOLNIK. The aim of this game was to enable the young participants to understand the meaning of being a minority group and respecting each other’s ethnic identities. Through simulation participants identified strategies for conflict resolution and tried to make a link to reality in minority context.

The event was visited not only by young participants of the workshop but by various representatives of media. Special guests were participants of all four editions of the Leadership Development Programme from Skopje, members of the LDP Alumni Network.

“…. "Half of all young people are considering living abroad", page 8. That's all I see. That small headline in the left corner. If they let us come and go as we'd like to, everything would be different. We would come back. This way. each chance is your last chance. We know it well. That's why we don't come back. That's why we leave for good. That's why we forget. It's not just the money and the good jobs. It's freedom. Which we don't have.”……” I feel the weight of our doom, of all the people around me, the ones who are desperately going after visas, Europe, freedom. This will never pass, I reckon” (Yet Another Departure by Vitomirka Trebovac, Best Stories from Visa Queues)

Youth in the Balkans need to shed a sense of inferiority as victims, and to unite with other like-minded youth. The inability to experience other cultures and other worldviews results in the development of ghetto-logic. To overcome the great challenges that confront them, young people should get connected more to the global stage. The open minded, visionary and socially aware youth of the Balkans has an active role to play in the region’s development today, not tomorrow.

With the aim of promoting European values in future generations, the Fund will undertake and support initiatives allowing young generations in the Western Balkans to experience and learn about Europe.

These initiatives will:

  • address opportunities that exist for young people to play an active role in contributing to the development of the Balkan region;
  • serve as catalisators for emerging positive change makers and leaders in the Balkan societies;
  • encourage the spirit of co-operation by identifying new connecting issues for young generations in the region and the EU;
  • create a network of ‘young ambassadors’ of the region.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
