ANNOUNCEMENT: “How can EU do better in the Balkans?” - LDP Joint Activity in Prishtina
Experiencing Europe

19 March, 11:00, Grand Hotel

The LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FELLOWS have the pleasure to invite you to the conference “HOW CAN EU DO BETTER IN BALKANS? - a regional perspective from Kosovo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, Bulgaria”.

The conference is organized in the framework of the IV Edition (2009 – 2010), Southeast Europe and the EU – Leadership Development Programme, an academic programme developed by the College of Europe (Bruges), the TRANSFUSE Association (Berlin) and the European Fund for the Balkans (Belgrade). This programme aims to transmit knowledge about the EU and the development of its relations with Southeast Europe, as well as wider issues of international and economic relations.

This event will be used as an opportunity to present the main result of the LDP Kosovo Joint Activity, “How can the EU do better?” publication. This presentation is a result of 3 months long research and interviews conducted with experts and civil society representatives in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Kosovo. The publication is offering inputs and suggestions how can the EU do better in the Balkans. After official presentation this publication will be widely distributed among the stakeholders in the region and EU.

LDP Fellows hereby invite all interested students, academics, representatives from the civil society, international community and public institutions to attend this conference to share their opinions and extend views on the topic.

You will have a chance to get a hard copy of the publication and also be more informed about the programme on 2010/2011 edition.

“…. "Half of all young people are considering living abroad", page 8. That's all I see. That small headline in the left corner. If they let us come and go as we'd like to, everything would be different. We would come back. This way. each chance is your last chance. We know it well. That's why we don't come back. That's why we leave for good. That's why we forget. It's not just the money and the good jobs. It's freedom. Which we don't have.”……” I feel the weight of our doom, of all the people around me, the ones who are desperately going after visas, Europe, freedom. This will never pass, I reckon” (Yet Another Departure by Vitomirka Trebovac, Best Stories from Visa Queues)

Youth in the Balkans need to shed a sense of inferiority as victims, and to unite with other like-minded youth. The inability to experience other cultures and other worldviews results in the development of ghetto-logic. To overcome the great challenges that confront them, young people should get connected more to the global stage. The open minded, visionary and socially aware youth of the Balkans has an active role to play in the region’s development today, not tomorrow.

With the aim of promoting European values in future generations, the Fund will undertake and support initiatives allowing young generations in the Western Balkans to experience and learn about Europe.

These initiatives will:

  • address opportunities that exist for young people to play an active role in contributing to the development of the Balkan region;
  • serve as catalisators for emerging positive change makers and leaders in the Balkan societies;
  • encourage the spirit of co-operation by identifying new connecting issues for young generations in the region and the EU;
  • create a network of ‘young ambassadors’ of the region.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
